He embarked on his military career by enlisting into the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) as a member of the Nigerian Defence Academy Regular Course 39. Abubakar was commissioned as a Pilot Officer on 19 September 1992, marking the beginning of his journey as an esteemed pilot in the NAF.
He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the Nigerian Defence Academy in Kaduna and has further expanded his knowledge by obtaining a Master's Degree in International Affairs and Diplomacy from Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria.

He also held the role of Aviation Planning Officer in MONUC Air Operations in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo.
